Lead times for new ambulances have increased considerably, from 90-120 days typically, to over 2 years recently. Lack of profitability compared to other types of vehicle chassis has dramatically slowed the ambulance chassis production from the major automobile manufacturers, namely Ford that produces roughly 80% of the ambulance chassis for the US market. This, in turn, is causing ambulance manufacturers, that utilize the chassis, to lay-off skilled workers due to the lack of chassis to build upon, making a quick ramp up once chassis are secured more difficult.
This is something to be aware of as you plan for your organization’s fleet needs.
